Internal Family Systems Therapy for Individuals

Discover who you truly are.

Life in Hershey offers small-town charm and a more relaxed pace that many residents appreciate. But even in a town where life feels a little calmer and quieter, you may still find yourself stressed and overwhelmed by your circumstances. You may feel stuck or be struggling to overcome a painful experience that continues to hold you back. You may have friction in your relationships that leaves you feeling misunderstood and frustrated. Even if you feel alone and isolated, healing is possible, and the right support can make a dramatic impact.

One of my specialties is Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS). This therapy approach is based on the idea that we are not one single, fixed self. Instead, we are made up of multiple "parts,” and each part has its own perspective, feelings, and specific job to do. When we experience internal conflict, IFS helps us understand which parts are involved and how each one is trying to help. In our work together, we will focus on understanding these different parts and using deepened self-awareness to develop greater compassion for yourself and others.

What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

We often think of ourselves as having one self, one personality, one way of being. But if you pay attention, you'll notice different parts of you showing up in different situations.

For example,

  • You might want one thing but you find yourself doing something completely opposite.

  • You might want to speak up but a part of you tells you to keep quiet.

  • Or you may desire deeper connection but act in a way that avoids it.

None of this is unusual from an Internal Family Systems Therapy perspective. IFS invites you to be curious about your different parts instead of trying to get rid of them.

Because both the part that wants you to speak and the one that wants you to be quiet are trying to do something for you.

Just as the part that wants to move forward and the part that's pulling you back are both there for a reason.

When you understand the motives and contributions of your parts, your inner conflict decreases. Your relationships improve. You stop trying to fit into a box.

How Does IFS Therapy Work?

Individual IFS therapy starts with understanding what you'd like to explore in therapy. IFS can be used as part of both longer-term therapy and shorter-term work, depending on your needs.

Rather than forcing anything, IFS offers a gentle way to explore what you're going through. We can start to notice the different parts of you that show up in your relationships and everyday life.

I'll invite you to get curious about the parts that may be causing inner conflict. Together, we can work toward understanding these parts with more compassion.

How Can IFS Help Individual Adults Seeking Therapy?

IFS makes space for all the different parts of you. And it offers a supportive way to explore your identity, relationships, emotions, and behaviors.

IFS can be helpful if you've ever felt that you don't fit who you’re “supposed to be.”

This can be helpful for LGBTQ+ individuals, people exploring their gender or sexuality, and people who identify as nonbinary.

If you've spent a lot of time feeling different or like you don't fit in, IFS offers a new way to see yourself. You can hold space for all your parts without trying to make one better, more acceptable, or more important than another. There is room for all of you.

My Story as an IFS Therapist Supporting LGBTQ Adults

I specialize in supporting LGBTQ+ and Autistic/ADHD teens and adults as they learn to live as their true selves in a world that does not always accept who they are.

I believe in being real, open, and showing up as my full self. I want the same for you.

Together, we can work through what is getting in your way and build a life that feels more true to who you are.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer services in person or online?

1

I conduct all therapy sessions in person at my office as my ADHD can make it difficult for me to focus during online sessions. This workplace accommodation helps me to ensure that I can provide you with the best possible service.

What is your cancellation policy?

2

First Brick Counseling requires at least 24 hours' notice to cancel a session. If you cancel your appointment with less than 24 hours' notice, you will be charged a late cancellation fee of $100. If you no-show an appointment, you will be charged the full $180 session fee.

How long do I need to be in therapy?

3

There is no predetermined answer to this question. Therapy is a deeply personal process that varies from person to person. Your personal goals will affect how long you stay in therapy. Some people need only a few sessions, while others stay in therapy for a few years. We will discuss discharge planning on an ongoing basis so you can provide feedback and know what to expect.
